SOAPBOX HOUSTON: AN EXPERIMENT IN FREE SPEECH

SATURDAY, JUNE 5, 2021 FROM 2:00 PM TO 3:30 PM CT
In an age of deep political polarization, inspired by the Hyde Park Speakers’ Corner in London, Soapbox Houston was an exercise in free-speech, attempting to further coalition-building and unity through the honest sharing of ideas. Interested speakers had up to five minutes to present their viewpoints. We asked that they refrain from personal attacks, incitement and hate speech, broadly considered. The five minute time limit was strictly enforced. The event took place on the deck of the Little House.
We used a small portable PA system to ensure that the speakers could be heard. There was a reinforced “soap box” podium, that folks could optionally stand on. Some did.
About eight folks were brave enough to participate and it was attended by about as many non speakers.
